Abstract

The effects of frustration play a major role in determining complex equilibrium structures at low temperature for systems with discrete symmetry. We consider a model with Potts symmetry on a cubic lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interaction but antiferromagnetic for next-to-nearest-neighbours. By increasing the ratio of the latter term with respect to the former, the system exhibits different orderings. First it is ferromagnetic, then superantiferromagnetic and eventually reveals a new peculiar phase. To these phases we associate the progressive breakdown of translational invariance. In these novel equilibria the system is characterised by a degeneration in the ground state which is very high compared with non-frustrated spin systems, but still much lower than in the spin-glass case. This has interesting consequences in the thermodynamics of the system, as temperature-induced orderings. We discuss also the relevance of topological concepts like vortex-lines to characterise the new phase. By means of a Monte Carlo simulation the whole phase diagram of the model has been recovered.
